The award winning Hanover Co-op Community Market sits on an eccentrically shaped, prominent intersection and is highly visible to the community. The store is both a neighborhood necessity and area amenity. Generous south facing glass enhances the store’s transparency and connection to the neighborhood.
The design process began with a thorough analysis of the site, addressing views, solar angles, pedestrian/vehicle circulation and relationships to local streets and buildings.
Working with Co-op staff, UK Architects developed the program, established department relationships, examined circulation, support and storage and selected preliminary fixtures. Light monitors and translucent glass provide day lighting. A large glazed vestibule offers protection from the winter winds. In the summer, its open garage doors connect the interior to the outside. State of the art refrigeration equipment, fixtures and lighting make the store extremely energy efficient and aesthetically pleasing. In addition, the store is heated and cooled using a geothermal heat pump system.
The Hanover Community Market project was awarded the Business NH Magazine "Green Structure Award: New Building" in September 2009.
The project was also awarded the top Honor award from the New Hampshire Chapter of the American Institute of Architects in January 2010.
And, it received the Merit Award of Excellence from Plan NH in March 2011.
"From the very beginning of our process, you have taken an integrated approach to our design. Everyone has been involved in a collaborative way in putting together a project that meets our objectives. The team has been sensitive to our desires for a "green" building.
... I believe our building will provide the kind of community oriented gathering place the town, the neighbors and the Co-op envision. It will truly be the gateway the site demands and the community wants.
Most importantly, the UK team has been great to work with to produce a market that I believe will work for our consumer members. You have noted all the data we have provided and listened to our ideas on how the store should work and have come up with an exciting design."
