The Miller Building at Kimball Union Academy originally housed the school’s dining hall, and then became its student center and fitness center. After relocating both the student center and fitness center, UK Architects developed a plan to convert the existing building into a Library, Learning Center, and Humanities Classroom building with 14 regular classrooms, a technology classroom, an A/V classroom, and 7 group study rooms. All of the classrooms are fully integrated with the latest in educational technology. This project is the signature academic building of the School.
A significant part of the renovation is an upgrade to the thermal envelope, mechanical and lighting systems. The result is a building that has an increased usage of 200% while at the same time achieving a 46% reduction in energy consumption.
The project was constructed in 2 phases between 2009 and 2014. The project was completed on the bicentennial anniversary of KUA and the 50th anniversary of the building.
